What Fascia Does and Why It Matters
Fascia is the horizontal board running along the lower edge of your roofline, just below the shingles and directly behind your eavestrough. Most homeowners see it as a trim element. Contractors see it as a structural anchor.
Fascia serves three functions. First, it caps the ends of the roof rafters, sealing them from direct weather exposure. Second, it provides the surface your eavestrough screws or clips into. How do I know if I need to repair or replace my fascia?
If the damage is limited to one or two sections and the boards behind them are still solid, repair is usually the right call. If you press the board and it is soft, if multiple sections are showing rot or paint failure, or if the gutters have been pulling away for more than one season, full replacement is the more practical option. A free inspection gives you a clear answer. We will tell you honestly which way to go.
Can I replace fascia without replacing the gutters?
Yes, though the gutters need to come off to do the job properly. We remove the eavestrough, install the new fascia, and reattach the gutters. If the gutters are still in good shape, they go back up on the new board. If they are showing wear, we can quote replacing them at the same time. Doing both together saves on labour costs since the gutters are already down.
What is the difference between fascia and soffit?
Fascia is the vertical-facing board at the edge of the roofline, running horizontally along the front of the rafter ends. This is where the gutters attach. Soffit is the material that runs horizontally underneath the eave overhang, filling the space between the fascia and the exterior wall. They are installed together and usually colour-matched to each other. If one is deteriorating, it is worth checking the condition of the other at the same time.
Why does my fascia keep rotting even after it has been painted?
Paint protects the face of the board, but moisture usually enters from behind or from the top, where the drip edge and roof shingles meet the fascia. If the joint between the drip edge and the fascia board is not properly sealed, or if the eavestrough is overflowing and running down behind the board, paint alone will not prevent rot. Replacing wood fascia with aluminum eliminates the problem entirely since aluminum does not absorb moisture.
Is aluminum fascia worth the extra cost over wood?
In Calgary, yes. Wood fascia needs to be repainted every few years, is vulnerable to moisture from ice dam runoff, and tends to deteriorate faster in our freeze-thaw climate than in milder regions. Aluminum requires no painting, handles freeze-thaw movement without cracking, and comes with a 40-year product warranty on Gentek products.
