Eavestrough is the Canadian term for rain gutters. The trough runs along the roofline, collects water off the roof, and directs it through downspouts away from your foundation. In Calgary, a correctly sized and installed system is one of the simplest ways to prevent ice dams, fascia rot, and basement moisture.
Chinook Exteriors installs 5-inch and 6-inch seamless aluminum eavestroughs for residential and commercial customers using Gentek Building Products. Seamless systems are fabricated on site in one continuous length, with joints only at corners. We offer 6-inch eavestrough for residential homes, which most Calgary contractors reserve for commercial work only. Both sizes are available through the Gentek colour system to match your fascia and soffit.

One note: Chinook Exteriors does not offer gutter cleaning as a standalone service. If debris buildup is a recurring problem at your property, an Alu-Rex leaf guard system is the more practical long-term solution.

Alu-Rex is a Canadian manufacturer of perforated aluminum gutter protection systems. Their products cover the eavestrough opening, letting water drain through while keeping leaves, debris, seeds, and ice out of the trough. The result is a gutter that functions year-round without regular manual cleaning.
Chinook Exteriors is a certified Alu-Rex installer. Alu-Rex offers two systems: the T-Rex continuous hanger for new gutter installations, and the Gutter Clean System for existing eavestroughs. What is the difference between a 5-inch and 6-inch eavestrough?
A 6-inch eavestrough handles roughly double the water volume of a 5-inch system. It also uses heavier gauge aluminum, which holds its shape better under the weight of ice and snow. For most Calgary bungalows and smaller homes, 5-inch is sufficient. For larger homes, homes with steep or complex rooflines, or homes that have had persistent overflow issues with a 5-inch system, the 6-inch is the better choice. We size the system at the free estimate based on your actual roof area and drainage requirements.
How long do eavestroughs last in Calgary?
Seamless aluminum eavestroughs typically last 20 to 30 years in Calgary when properly installed and maintained. The limiting factor is usually not the trough itself but the fascia it is attached to and the joint sealant at corners. Freeze-thaw cycles work the sealant and fasteners loose over time. An annual inspection in spring, before heavy rain season, catches these issues while they are still inexpensive to address.
Do gutter guards actually work in Calgary winters?
The Alu-Rex systems we install are specifically designed for cold climates. The Gutter Clean System keeps debris out of the trough and allows snowmelt to drain correctly when temperatures rise. The T-Rex continuous hanger protects the gutter structure from deforming under the weight of ice and snow. Both systems carry warranties that cover clogging. The cheap mesh-style guards that clog with pollen and sap do not perform the same way.
Why does water overflow the gutters on my Calgary home even though they appear unblocked?
Overflow on an apparently clear system usually comes from one of three things: the eavestrough is undersized for the roof area draining into it, the slope is incorrect and water is pooling in a low section rather than running to the downspout, or the downspout is undersized or blocked lower down. All three are diagnosable in a free inspection. A 5-inch trough on a large two-storey home is a common cause we see in Calgary, particularly after the roof was extended or a dormer was added.
Can I have new gutters installed in winter in Calgary?
Yes, though there are practical limitations. Aluminum installations can proceed in most winter conditions. Sealants used at corners and joints require temperatures above roughly -10 Celsius to cure correctly, so very cold days are generally avoided. If your system is actively failing and cannot wait until spring, we assess the conditions at the time of booking and give you an honest answer about what is feasible.
