Frequently Asked questions
How long does a roof last in Calgary?
Most asphalt shingle roofs in Calgary last 20–25 years under normal conditions — shorter if the roof has taken repeated hail hits or was poorly ventilated from the start. Calgary’s freeze-thaw cycles and hailstorms are harder on shingles than the same materials would face in most other Canadian cities. If your roof is over 15 years old and you have not had it inspected since installation, it is worth doing before problems show up inside the home.
Can you replace a roof in winter in Calgary?
Yes, though there are real limitations. Asphalt shingles require temperatures above 4°C for the adhesive strip to seal properly. We can install in colder conditions using hand-sealing, but it adds time and cost. If your job is not urgent, late spring through early fall gives you the best results and the most scheduling flexibility. If you have a situation that cannot wait — storm damage, active leaks — we will tell you honestly what is and is not safe to do in cold weather.
What should I ask a roofing contractor before hiring them?
Four things matter most: Does the contractor carry WCB coverage and liability insurance — and will they give you a clearance letter? Are they certified by the manufacturer for the products they are installing, or just claiming to be? And is the quote itemized, or a single number with no breakdown? A contractor who cannot answer all four clearly is worth skipping.
How many quotes should I get for a roof replacement?
Two or three is enough if you know what to compare. The lowest quote is rarely the best value — it is often a sign that something is missing, whether that is the building permit, code-required ice and water shield, or proper disposal.
What happens if I leave a damaged roof too long?
A small issue compounds fast. Water that gets under a damaged shingle does not stay there — it works its way into the decking, then the insulation, then the ceiling. What starts as a $1,000 shingle repair can become $8,000 in deck replacement and interior remediation within a year or two if the entry point is not addressed. The roof inspection is free. The delay is what costs money.
