Eavestrough — Chinook Exteriors Inc., Calgary

An eavestrough system does one job: move water off your roof and away from your home. When it does that job properly, your foundation stays dry, your fascia boards stay intact, and ice dams stop forming at the eaves. When it fails, the damage is slow, expensive, and usually well underway before anyone notices.

Chinook Exteriors installs, repairs, and replaces seamless aluminum eavestroughs across Calgary and the surrounding area. We are a Gentek authorized installer, which means the products we install carry a 40-year manufacturer warranty that not every contractor can offer. We also hold the Consumer Choice Award for Best Eavestroughs in Southern Alberta, a recognition we have received seven years in a row. That track record comes from actual customer experience, not a marketing campaign.

Every job starts with a free inspection. We look at the full system: trough condition, slope and pitch, joint integrity, downspout sizing and placement, and fascia attachment. You get a written quote before any work begins.

Eavestrough Installation

New eavestroughs are fabricated on site from a continuous aluminum coil, cut to the exact length of your roofline. This produces a seamless trough with joints only at corners, which is significantly more durable than sectional systems bought in preset lengths and connected at multiple points. In Calgary, where freeze-thaw cycles put constant stress on every joint and seal, seamless construction is not a luxury. It is the right way to do it.

We install both 5-inch and 6-inch profiles in residential applications. Downspouts, extensions, and hangers are included. We calculate the correct slope for your specific roofline to make sure water drains to the downspout rather than pooling in the low points of the trough.

Eavestrough Repair

The most common eavestrough repairs we see on Calgary homes are joint failures from freeze-thaw sealant deterioration, troughs pulling away from the fascia when fasteners work loose, sections dented or cracked by hailstorms or falling ice, and slope problems where a section has shifted and water pools rather than drains. We inspect the full system before quoting any repair so the fix addresses the root cause, not just the visible damage.

Eavestrough Replacement

When a system is beyond repairable, or when older vinyl eavestroughs are finally giving out, a full replacement is the right call. Vinyl does not hold up well in Calgary’s temperature swings. It becomes brittle in cold weather and expands in summer heat, which works the sectional joints apart over time. Replacing with seamless aluminum through the Gentek colour system gives you a system matched to your exterior that should last 20 to 30 years with periodic maintenance.

If a roof replacement is being done at the same time, this is the ideal moment to replace the eavestroughs. The fascia is already exposed, the gutters are already off, and the combined labour saves money over two separate jobs.

Seasonal Maintenance

In Calgary, eavestrough maintenance matters most in spring and fall. A clogged system going into winter is one of the main causes of ice dams at the eaves. We offer seasonal inspection and maintenance visits that cover trough condition, joint sealant, downspout flow, and fascia attachment, plus any minor repairs needed before the season changes.

One note: Chinook Exteriors does not offer standalone gutter cleaning. If recurring debris buildup is the issue at your property, we recommend looking at an Alu-Rex gutter guard system rather than a recurring cleaning schedule. An Alu-Rex installation eliminates the problem rather than managing it twice a year.

5-Inch or 6-Inch Eavestrough? How to Choose for Your Calgary Home

Eavestrough — Chinook Exteriors Inc., Calgary

Most Calgary contractors install 5-inch eavestroughs on residential homes and reserve the 6-inch for commercial buildings. Chinook Exteriors installs both on residential properties, and for some homes the 6-inch is genuinely the better choice.

For most standard Calgary bungalows and two-storey homes, 5-inch is the right size. If your home has a large footprint, a steep or complex roofline that concentrates water into a small section of gutter, or a history of overflow during heavy rain or spring snowmelt, the 6-inch is worth discussing at the free estimate. We size the system based on your actual roof drainage area, not a default preference.

Gentek Eavestrough and the Colour System

Chinook Exteriors installs Gentek Building Products eavestroughs. Gentek is one of the most widely used exterior product lines in Western Canada and carries a 40-year product warranty on their aluminum eavestrough systems. Warranty coverage depends on the product selected and manufacturer installation requirements.

One advantage that often goes unmentioned: the Gentek colour system. Most homeowners do not realize their eavestroughs can be colour-matched to their fascia, soffit, and siding. The standard industry default is white or brown. With Gentek, the colour range includes white, wicker, brown, almond, and additional options, all available in both 5-inch and 6-inch profiles. We bring samples to the estimate so you can see the options against your existing exterior before any material is ordered.

Typical project cost in Calgary: $8 to $14 per linear foot installed for a 5-inch aluminum system. The 6-inch profile runs $13 to $17 per linear foot. A typical Calgary home needs 150 to 200 linear feet of eavestrough. Removal of the old system adds $300 to $600. We provide a detailed written estimate after the free inspection so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Why Calgary Homeowners Choose Chinook Exteriors for Eavestroughs

Best Eavestroughs, Southern Alberta. Seven separate award years, not a single strong run. Check the Consumer Choice Award records directly.

Frequently asked questions

Eavestrough questions, answered

How long do eavestroughs last in Calgary?

Seamless aluminum eavestroughs typically last 20 to 30 years in Calgary when properly installed and maintained. The trough itself rarely fails first. The more common points of failure are the joint sealant at corners, which freeze-thaw cycles work loose over time, and the fascia board the trough is attached to. An inspection every couple of years catches these before they become expensive.

What is the difference between seamless and sectional eavestroughs?

Sectional eavestroughs come in preset lengths, typically 10 or 12 feet, and are joined together with connectors along the run. Every connector is a potential leak point, and in Calgary’s freeze-thaw climate, the sealant at those joints deteriorates faster than it would in a milder city. Seamless eavestroughs are fabricated in one continuous length on site, with joints only at corners. There are far fewer failure points. We only install seamless systems.

Why are my gutters overflowing even though they look unblocked?

Overflow on an apparently clear system usually has one of three causes: the slope is incorrect and water is pooling in a low section rather than running to the downspout, the trough is undersized for the roof area draining into it, or the downspout is undersized or blocked lower down. All three are diagnosable in a free inspection. A 5-inch trough under a large or steep roofline is a common cause we see regularly across Calgary.

Will my eavestrough cause ice dams in winter?

A clogged or undersized eavestrough contributes to ice dam formation, but the primary driver is attic heat escaping through the roof and melting snow, which then refreezes at the colder eave. A clean, properly sized eavestrough helps the system drain correctly when temperatures rise, which reduces the severity of ice dams. If ice dams are a recurring issue at your property, the eavestrough condition is worth checking, but so is the attic insulation and ventilation.

Do you offer eavestrough cleaning?

No. Chinook Exteriors does not offer standalone gutter cleaning as a service. If recurring debris is the issue, we recommend an Alu-Rex Gutter Clean System installed over your existing eavestroughs. It keeps debris out of the trough year-round without requiring seasonal cleaning. It carries a 40-year clog-free warranty and is a one-time installation rather than an annual expense.
