Gutters That Work Properly Protect the Rest of Your Home

A functioning eavestrough system is one of the cheapest ways to protect a Calgary home. It moves water off the roof and away from the foundation before it can cause the kind of damage that costs tens of thousands of dollars to fix. When it fails, the harm is slow and often invisible until it is well underway: water pooling near the footing, fascia boards rotting from behind, basement moisture appearing year after year with no obvious cause.

Most eavestrough problems on Calgary homes are fixable. A joint that has opened up after five winters of freeze-thaw movement, a section that has sagged because the original spike-and-ferrule mounts worked loose under ice weight, a downspout that was placed 15 years ago without considering where the water actually ends up. These are not failures of the material. They are failures of installation or time. We find the actual cause and fix it properly.

Chinook Exteriors installs new systems, repairs existing ones, and carries out seasonal maintenance across Calgary and the surrounding area. We are a Gentek authorized installer and hold the Consumer Choice Award for Best Eavestroughs in Southern Alberta, seven consecutive years.

Gutter Installation Calgary

We install seamless aluminum eavestroughs fabricated on site from a continuous coil. The trough is cut to the exact length of your roofline and joined only at corners. That construction matters in Calgary because every joint in a sectional system is a point that freeze-thaw cycles work apart over time. Fewer joints means a more durable system across the life of the installation.

Every new installation includes a full assessment of your roofline before we fabricate anything. We calculate the correct slope for drainage, place downspouts based on where water needs to go rather than where they are easiest to reach, and confirm the fascia condition before attaching anything to it. Getting these details wrong at installation is the main reason homeowners end up calling for repairs within a few years.

New Build and Addition Installations

New builds and additions require coordination with the roofing schedule. Eavestroughs go in after the roofing underlayment and before the fascia capping is complete. We work with your project timeline and confirm the installation sequence with whoever is managing the build.

Full Re-Eavestroughing

When an entire system reaches the end of its life, a full replacement is usually more cost-effective than continued piecemeal repairs. Vinyl systems that have become brittle, older sectional aluminum with multiple leaking joints, or any system where the original slope is incorrect throughout, all warrant a full replacement. We remove the old system, inspect the fascia for any damage that occurred underneath, and install a new seamless system colour-matched through the Gentek colour range.

Typical installation cost in Calgary: $8 to $14 per linear foot for a 5-inch seamless aluminum system. $13 to $17 per linear foot for 6-inch. Most Calgary homes need 150 to 200 linear feet. Removal of the old system adds $300 to $600. We provide an itemized written estimate after a free inspection.

Gutter Repair Calgary

The most common mistake in eavestrough repair is treating the symptom without diagnosing the cause. A leaking joint that gets resealed without correcting the slope problem that caused it will leak again within a season. A sagging section that gets re-hung without replacing the failed mount hardware will sag again within a year. We start every repair call with a full assessment of the system before quoting anything.

Joint Resealing and Leak Repair

Joints at corners are the most common leak point on Calgary eavestroughs. Freeze-thaw cycles open the sealant gradually until water gets through. We strip the old sealant, clean the joint properly, and apply professional-grade polymeric sealant. If the corner is physically distorted, we replace it rather than reseal over a failed surface.

Sagging Eavestrough Repair

Sagging is almost always a fastener problem. Many Calgary homes still have spike-and-ferrule systems that pull out of the fascia under repeated ice loading. Re-spiking the same holes gives you another year at best. The correct fix is upgrading to hidden hanger hardware, which screws directly into the fascia and holds properly under snow and ice weight.

Section Replacement

Hailstorms dent and distort sections, restricting flow without causing an immediate visible leak. Falling ice or branches can crack sections outright. We replace affected sections with colour-matched Gentek aluminum and advise on the visual match before ordering if the existing colour has faded significantly.

Downspout Repair and Replacement

Cracked, disconnected, or blocked downspouts push water down the exterior wall rather than away from the home. We repair or replace damaged downspouts and extensions, and check outlet placement at the same time. Where an outlet discharges too close to the foundation, we reposition it to direct water at least six feet clear of the building.

Slope Correction

A trough that pools water instead of draining to the downspout adds weight, causes more sagging, and freezes solid during cold snaps. It is one of the most underdiagnosed problems on Calgary eavestroughs, and one of the most common reasons repairs do not hold. We re-hang and re-pitch affected sections to restore proper drainage.

Gutter Repair Cost in Calgary

Repair costs depend on the type of problem, how many sections are affected, and whether any underlying hardware or fascia needs attention at the same time. Here are the ranges we see on typical Calgary jobs:

Joint resealing (1-3 corners)

Cost Range : $150 to $400

Quick turnaround. Includes sealant strip, clean, and reseal at corner joints.

Spike-to-hanger hardware upgrade

Cost Range : $250 to $600

Per section. Resolves the root cause of sagging rather than re-spiking the same holes.

Section replacement (1-2 sections)

Cost Range : $300 to $700

Includes colour-matched Gentek aluminum and proper slope alignment on reinstall.

Downspout repair or replacement

Cost Range : $200 to $500

Per downspout including extension. Outlet repositioning quoted separately if needed.

Slope correction

Cost Range : $300 to $800

Depends on how many sections need to be re-hung and whether fascia repairs are involved.

Multiple issues, one inspection visit

Cost Range : $500 to $1,500

Most repair calls involve more than one of the above. Written estimate provided before work begins.

These are working ranges based on typical Calgary jobs, not a quote. The only accurate number comes after a free inspection. If we find additional issues during the repair, we stop and show you before spending another dollar.

Gutter Maintenance Calgary

Regular maintenance is the cheapest thing a Calgary homeowner can do for their eavestrough system. A system that goes into winter with a compromised joint, a partially blocked downspout, or a section that is slightly out of pitch will be significantly worse by spring. Freeze-thaw cycles amplify every small problem.

We carry out seasonal maintenance visits in spring and fall. Here is what is included:

Spring Maintenance (April to May)

Full system inspection after the freeze-thaw season. We check joint and sealant condition, downspout flow, slope alignment, and fascia attachment. We clear any accessible blockages and provide a written summary of issues found with repair quotes if needed.

Fall Maintenance (September to October)

Full inspection before freeze-up, plus a check that downspout outlets are clear and directing water well away from the foundation. We assess any hail or storm damage from the summer and advise on what needs to be addressed before winter versus what can wait until spring.

Chinook Exteriors does not offer standalone gutter cleaning as a service. If debris accumulation is a recurring issue at your property, the most effective long-term solution is an Alu-Rex gutter guard system installed over your existing eavestroughs. It keeps debris out permanently rather than requiring a cleaning schedule twice a year.

Repair or Replace? How We Help You Decide

The right answer depends on the age of the system, the number of problems present, and the cost comparison over the next several years.

Here is a straightforward guide:

Repair when:

  • The system is under 15 years old and problems are isolated to specific sections
  • One or two sections have been damaged by a specific event (hail, falling branch)
  • The trough material itself is still in good condition
  • The fascia underneath is sound and holding the hangers securely
  • Repair cost is clearly less than replacement over the next three to five year

Replace when:

  • The system is 20 or more years old with widespread joint failure or deterioration
  • The original installation had incorrect slope across the whole run and repairs keep repeating
  • Vinyl eavestroughs have become brittle and are cracking at multiple points
  • Spike-and-ferrule mounts have failed across most of the system
  • You are spending more than half the cost of a new system on repairs within a two-year period

Frequently Asked questions

My gutters were repaired last year and the same section is leaking again. Why?

This usually means the repair addressed the symptom rather than the cause. The most common examples are a joint that was resealed without correcting an underlying slope problem, or a sagging section that was re-fastened with the same worn spike holes in the same fascia board. If water is pooling in a section due to incorrect pitch, the sealant at that joint will keep failing regardless of how many times it is resealed. We inspect the full system and diagnose the root cause before quoting any repair.

How do I know if my gutters need to be repaired or fully replaced?

If the problem is isolated to one or two sections and the rest of the system is in good condition, repair is almost always the right call. If you have widespread joint failure, multiple sagging sections, vinyl that is cracking in cold weather, or a system where the same repairs keep recurring, replacement is usually the better investment. A free inspection gives you a clear answer. We will tell you honestly which direction makes more financial sense for your specific situation.

How often should Calgary homeowners have their eavestroughs inspected?

Twice a year is the standard recommendation for Calgary’s climate: once in spring after the freeze-thaw season ends, and once in fall before freeze-up. After any significant hailstorm or wind event it is also worth a look, since hail can dent sections and restrict flow without creating an immediately obvious leak. Most problems we find during a spring inspection could have been addressed cheaply in fall if someone had looked.

Can you repair eavestroughs that are pulling away from the fascia?

Yes, but the repair depends on what caused the separation. If the spike-and-ferrule mounts have failed because the wood behind them is still solid, we upgrade to hidden hanger hardware which holds far better under ice loading. If the fascia board itself has deteriorated, the fascia needs to be replaced before we can properly re-attach the trough. We assess both at the inspection so you know exactly what is involved before any work begins.

Do you repair gutters in winter in Calgary?

For urgent repairs where water is actively getting into the fascia or foundation, yes. Sealant applications work best above roughly minus 10 Celsius, so we work around conditions where possible. Section replacements and hardware upgrades can proceed in most winter conditions. We assess the situation at booking and give you a straight answer on what is feasible and what is better left until spring.
