New siding can give your home an instant makeover and increase its market value significantly. However, it isn’t purely decorative. Siding also:
- Protects your house against external elements such as rain, snow, hail or ice
- Provides insulation and keeps walls free of insects, dirt and moisture.
- Protects the structural integrity of your home
That is why, no matter what type of siding you opt for, it is important to maintain it regularly and keep it in good condition.
In today’s blog we will look at four of the most popular types of siding and the methods to ensure that your home stays protected and in good shape:
- Vinyl
What is it? Vinyl siding is a durable and reliable exterior cladding manufactured primarily from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin. Long-lasting and versatile, vinyl siding never requires repainting and is not susceptible to rot or insect damage.
Durability: 20-30 years
Maintenance: Low maintenance
How to care about your vinyl siding: To keep your vinyl looking new, make sure to wash it at least once a year. To do so, use a hose, a sponge, a stiff-bristle brush and a mild detergent. Once you are done scrubbing the surface, rinse it with water.
Vinyl siding is designed to require very little maintenance. However, if a piece of siding does break off, you should fix it as soon as possible. If it remains loose, its shape will be altered and it will need to be replaced.
- Brick
What is it? Brick siding enhances the look of your home while being a durable building element. This siding system is designed to reduce maintenance costs and once installed, brick siding will last a very long time. It is also able to withstand very strong winds with little or no damage.
Durability: 100+ years
Maintenance: Moderate maintenance
How to care about your brick siding: Brick is relatively maintenance free but occasional cleaning, checks for water damage and repointing are necessary to ensure long-lasting structural integrity. Once a year, use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to remove any loose dirt.
Be on the lookout for moss, mildew or mold, all of which should be fixed immediately if spotted. A solution of bleach and water can be applied to these areas with a synthetic scrub brush but be sure to soak the brick first, so that it doesn’t become discoloured.
- Wood
What is it? Wood siding is available in a variety of colors and styles from shingles to panels. Lightweight and durable, wood siding is easy to install and paint and is environmentally friendly.
Durability: 50+ years
Maintenance: Moderate-high maintenance
How to care about your wood siding: Depending on where you live, wood siding needs to be treated every 4-6 years. Fixing any loose sheathing, replacing rotted planks and patching up any holes will ensure that your siding remains in good condition for many years.
- Aluminum
What is it? Aluminum siding is a great alternative to vinyl and cement-based sidings. It comes in a variety of finishes and unlike with wood siding, pests such as ants and termites cannot permeate its surface. It is also completely fireproof.
Durability: 20-30 years
Maintenance: Low maintenance
How to care about your aluminium siding: Aluminum siding requires very little maintenance apart from removing the occasional dents. If you find any rust on your metal siding, simply scrape it off and coat it with a sealant. Because aluminum siding is often painted, the occasional repainting will ensure that it stays in good condition for a long time.
