Fascia

What is Fascia?

Fascia, also known as fascia boards, is the wide strip that runs horizontally along the bottom edge of a building's roofline, right underneath the edge of the shingles.

Fascia provides your structure with an updated finished look, and the ease of no longer needing to paint or touch-up the exposed wooden board that runs horizontally along the edge of your roof. At Chinook Exteriors, we professionally install, repair and replace fascia boards, adding protection and aesthetic value to your home or business.

The diagram below shows how fascia fits in in relation to your home's other exterior elements, such as soffitsgutterssiding and eavestroughs.

What Is The Purpose of Fascia?

Together with soffits, fascia plays a dual purpose within your home's exterior: it works as both an important cosmetic element and a vital functional component.

Moisture Barrier

The primary function of the fascia is to provide a finished cap to the edge of your siding, roofline and soffit boards. If this area is missing, cracked or broken, moisture will inevitably enter the inner spaces of your exterior structure and can lead to mold, mildew and moss growth. This can of course compromise your other exterior elements and lead to extremely costs repairs if not caught in a timely manner.

Aesthetics

Fascia is often more visible than the soffit as it is the horizontal overhang portion of the exterior elements. Typically, the fascia and soffit are both the same color, and they become the trim color of your home’s exterior. The gutters also usually match these two elements, creating a seamless transition from the siding and roof colors to the trim of the home.

Altogether, these elements are important cosmetic elements and if broken, mismatched or cracked, can severely impact the look of your home. It is vital to keep your soffit and fascia in good condition for resale, return on investment and general curb appeal.

Pest Protection

Without fascia, your roof line and soffit wouldn't be capped off, leaving an unfinished, exposed edge. Not only would this space be susceptible to water, but the open, and protected space is attractive to pests such as birds, bats and squirrels, Similarly, unwanted insects build nests in these types of exposed areas, which could lead to a very unwanted infestation that could affect your soffit, siding, roof and even drywall.

When Should I Replace or Repair my Fascia?

There are many reasons why and when you should consider replacing or repairing your fascia or fascia board.

Interior Sweat: If you notice your upper walls are ‘sweating’ and your home seems dank due to no ventilation, your fascia and soffits may be compromised.

Signs of Rot: Fascia boards are one of the most common areas for rot on a structure. Their position just below the roofline makes them susceptible to water penetration.

Cracks and Breakage:  If you notice your fascia and soffit are cracked or broken you should immediately contact your exterior professionals to assess repair or replacement.

If you have noticed any of the above, you may be in need of fascia repair or installation. Contact Chinook Exteriors in Calgary for your free estimate today!

Testimonial

'I found Chinook Exteriors to be completely customer focused. I had a timely detailed estimate on the work I needed done. The owner of Chinook Exteriors took the time to explain in detail how they would cut the old fascia away to promote air flow. Any questions I had throughout the process were answered immediately, to my satisfaction,by either the owner or the workmen. The work was completed in two days and the workmen made the effort to ensure the site was kept tidy and clean. At the end of the process there was no garbage left behind at all. I originally went with Chinook Exteriors because of their BBB accreditation. The workmen were extremely cordial, experienced and professional. They did an excellent job and I could not be happier with the overall experience. I would not hesitate in recommending this company to others.'
